Math Park | Introducing Decimals: Tenths | Season 3

Publish date: 2024-08-14

- Hi, everybody.

Today is an exciting day.

We're going to find out who will win the Math Park Balloon Popping Contest.

Will it be Ivana or Janet?

We'll find out in a few minutes in the Math Park.

(caribbean music) (school bell ringing) (joyful shouts) - [host] Get ready for a very special super-duper math class.

We're going on a field trip where learning math is tons of fun.

Our destination is the Math Park.

(caribbean music) (ovation sounds) (joyful shouts) - Howdy chipmunks.

Welcome to Math Park.

I'm park ranger A. Rith Methic, but you can call me Ranger Rith.

Math Park is the place where robins are never blue and their eggs have a nested interest.

- Ranger Rith, guess what?

- What?

- They're back.

- Who's back?

- The UFOs, can't you see them?

(spacial sound) - Those aren't UFOs.

That's a decimal.

- You mean like a decimal point?

- That's right and here's how it works.

Now, what fraction is that?

- 3/10 - Correct?

And we can also show it another way as a decimal like this.

- Oh, "zero, decimal point, three."

So that's another way of showing 3/10.

I've seen it written without the zero before the decimal too.

- That's an okay way to write it too.

- Oops!

I'm late.

Bye - Where are you going?

- You'll see.

- [Host] And now it's time for the Math Park Balloon Popping Contest.

Our first contestant is Ivana.

There are 10 balloons here and we're going to see how many balloons Ivana can pop in five seconds.

Did we mention you need to be blindfolded?

Much better, there's that blindfold, she's got her pin and she has five seconds to pop those balloons.

Go!

(popping sound) (ovation sounds) And there's our stop signal.

Let's see how many balloons Ivana popped in five seconds.

She got 6/10 because 6 out of the 10 balloons were popped in the five seconds.

Way to go, Ivana.

We'll continue with the Math Park Balloon Popping Contest.

But first let's go to Ranger Rith in the Math Park helicopter.

(ovation sound) (helices sound) - You know, from up here you get to see some amazing architecture, take a look at that building, the windows have colorful curtains.

How many windows do you see here?

(helices sound) That's right, 10.

Now what fraction of the curtains are blue?

(helices sound) 4/10, to write it as a decimal it would look like this, but we still say "four tenths."

What fraction of the windows have red curtains?

(helices sound) 3/10 and how do we write that as a decimal?

That's right.

3/10.

What fraction of the windows have yellow curtains?

1/10 and how do we write that as a decimal?

That's right, 1/10.

(helices sound) - [host] Now back to the Math Park Balloon Popping Contest, our next contestant is Janet.

We have the 10 balloons back up there on the wall, ready to be popped and we'll see how many balloons Janet can pop in five seconds.

First she's got to get that blindfold on.

Okay, blindfolds on.

Five seconds Janet.

Ready?

Go!

(popping sound) (ovation sounds) (dinging) There's our stop signal.

Whoa, let's see how many balloons Janet popped.

Let's see what the judges tell us 8/10.

Okay, because that was 8 out of 10 balloons popped in five seconds.

Now let's go back and look, Ivana got 6/10 of the balloons popped in five seconds and Janet got 8/10 of the balloons popped in five seconds, so today's big winner is Janet.

Congratulations and Ivana you're a good sport.

Isn't that nice?

- Oh, I'm glad they're still friends.

(gong sound) (martial shout) (oriental music) (martial shout) (birds chirping) - Tenths (magical sound) 8/10 (oriental music) - [host] Hey!

you forgot to do the decimal, you gotta go back.

- [karateka] Okay, all right, all right.

8/10 (gong sound) (caribbean music) - 7/10 (country riff) - Howdy green horse.

I'm Math Dillon and we're going to have a little quick draw contest to see who's faster at mathematics.

Me or you.

Here's how it's gonna work in just a moment you're gonna see a fraction picture above my head and part of that fraction will be shaded in red.

Now what you're going to have to do is write it in decimal form faster than I can.

Think you can do it?

Alrighty, get ready.

It's set.

Draw!

(playful music) (speaking gibberish) (mocking laugh) Think you're faster than me, don't you?

(mocking laugh) (speaking gibberish) (playful music) Done!

- Did you get 9/10?

And did you write it this way?

Cause 9/10 of the fraction was in red.

If you wrote it like this, you got it correct!

(playful shouting) Whoa, you're faster than a bull in a red bandana factory, but I'm going to get you next time.

(mocking laugh) (organ music) (upbeat music) (clock ticking) (car tires screeching sound) (ovation sound) - [host] Can you say the following decimals before Charles does?

(clock ticking) - 4/10 2/10 9/10 - [host] Hey!

cheer up, you got him right.

- Mm I just love apples and I have two boxes of them, the first box has 10 red apples, the second box has 10 apples, but only 7 are red, the other 3 are green.

Now, did you know I can write a fraction to show how many red apples we have?

When you look at the first box, you see that the whole box is filled with red apples in the second box, there are seven red apples.

So here's how you would write it using fractions 1 7/10, the 1 means the whole box of apples and the 7/10 means that 7 out of the 10 apples in the second box are red.

How do we say it?

"One and seven tenths."

But did you know I can also do the same thing using a decimal?

Watch this.

I would write it like this one, decimal point, seven.

The 1 still means the whole box of apples set at red and the .7 means 7/10.

But how would we say it?

(chill music) We would say "one and seven tenths."

You know, this is so interesting I feel like dancing.

(caribbean music) - [host] Check it out it's time once again for the Math Park's Salsa Dances, I love this bit.

Okay, now, what decimal number does Roberto have?

(caribbean music) 1 8/10 and what about Janet?

(caribbean music) 1 6/10.

Now what goes between them "greater than" or "less than"?

(caribbean music) "greater than," is right because 1 8/10 > 1 6/10.

Now look at that them gonna change places, I knew it, they do that all the time.

Okay, now what goes between them?

"greater than" or "less than"?

(caribbean music) Well, that's not so hard, is just the opposite of what it was last time, "less than," 1 6/10 < 1 8/10 But guys, why don't you put down those signs and show us some real dancing?

There you go.

Now that is what I call salsa dance.

Yeah!

Now give us a dip.

I love it.

(upbeat music) - [host] It's time to play Build a Decimal where we find out which of our two contestants can build the biggest decimal number.

Our contestants are Kat and Roberto.

(gong sound) Contestants, let's look between you at the number generator.

What's the first digit going to be?

It is a five.

Let's see where they put it.

Kat put it in the one's place and Roberto in the tenths' place, very interesting.

Okay, one more digit to go.

And it is a four, not a lot of choice here.

Kat puts it in the tenths' place, Roberto in the one's place.

Now Kat has 5 4/10 and Roberto has 4 5/10, who built the bigger decimal number?

It's Kat!

because 5 4/10 > 4 5/10 way to go Kat.

(gong sound) Round two, let's look at that number generator.

Kat's ahead right now.

Good luck with you Roberto.

And the first digit is two.

Let's see where they put it.

Kat in the one's place Roberto in the tenths' place.

Kat is taking a chance there.

Let's see if it pays off.

All right.

Our next digit is three.

Again, there's only one thing they can do.

Kat puts it in the tenths' place and Roberto in the one's place.

What number did Kat build?

2 3/10 and what about Roberto?

3 2/10 who built the bigger number?

Roberto!

Congratulations.

And now we have a tie and it's time to break that tie with round three.

No telling who's gonna win this one.

All right, look at the number generator, let's see what our first digit is gonna be.

It's going to be a six.

Ooh, tough choice.

Let's see.

Kat put it in the one's place Roberto in the tenths' place.

This round could go either way.

Let's see what the next digit is going to be.

The digit is eight.

Kat puts it in the tenths' place and Roberto in the one's place.

And what decimal number did Kat build?

6 8/10, and what decimal number did the Roberto build?

6 8/10.

Who built the bigger number?

Roberto!

Congratulations, Roberto.

And you win today's game.

(fanfare sound) - Did you hear that?

That means Math Park is closing for today.

Until Math Park reopens I salute you math chipmunks (joyful shouts) - [host] It's the Math Park's field day and who will win the 100 yard dash?

Find out next time.

- [Ranger Rith] Math park is presented by Lucky Cat Productions (caribbean music)
